Establishing Your 14-Foot Investment

"A mature Wodyetia bifurcata is a hardy survivor, but the first 30 days are the most important for ensuring it thrives in its new home. Follow these expert tips for a beautiful, healthy palm:"

  • Critical Watering (Days 1–30): Newly planted palms need to 'bridge' their roots into your soil. Water your Foxtail deeply every single day for the first two weeks. For the following two weeks, taper down to every other day.
  • Florida Growth Expectations: Once established (usually after 6–12 months), your Foxtail will take off! In our Florida climate, expect 2–3 feet of new growth per year until it reaches its full 30-foot maturity.
  • Feeding for Color: To keep those 'foxtail' fronds a deep, vibrant green, use a high-quality, slow-release palm fertilizer (8-2-12) every 90 days. Foxtails are 'heavy feeders' and love the extra nutrients.
  • Zero-Effort Pruning: One of the best features of a mature Foxtail is that they are self-cleaning. As the palm grows, old fronds will brown and drop off on their own. There is no need to cut green fronds—let the tree do the work for you!
  • Freeze Protection: While highly resilient, if a rare Florida freeze is predicted, give your Foxtail a very deep watering the evening before. Moist soil stays warmer than dry soil and protects the root ball.

Customized After-Care for Florida Soil Conditions

Every landscape is different, and here in Florida, soil conditions can vary a lot from one property to the next. From fast-draining coastal sugar sand to heavier clay and moisture-holding soils inland, the ground beneath your palm plays a big role in how well it establishes.

At KJ Tropical Palm, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all care. When we install your Foxtail Palm (Wodyetia bifurcata), we take the time to consider your specific soil conditions and provide personalized after-care guidance to match your landscape. This includes simple, practical recommendations for watering, drainage, and fertilization—based on what will work best for your property.

Whether your yard has dry sand or stays consistently moist, our goal is to help your 14-foot Foxtail Palm settle in properly and grow strong for years to come.
