At KJ Tropical Palm, we recently completed a beautiful installation of a mature Foxtail Palm (Wodyetia bifurcata) in Tampa, FL. While these palms are famous for their lush, “foxtail” shaped fronds, they require specific attention when planted in the sandy and moist soil common to our area.

If you want your Foxtail to remain a deep-green showstopper, follow these professional maintenance steps.
1. The Morning Watering Rule
Timing is everything. We recommend watering your palm in the early morning (between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM).
• Prevents Disease: Morning watering allows the trunk to dry throughout the day. In Tampa’s high humidity, evening watering leaves the trunk damp overnight, which can invite fungus and “butt rot”.
• Maximum Hydration: It ensures the water reaches the roots before the hot Florida sun evaporates it.
• Heat Defense: It hydrates the tree before the peak afternoon heat, preventing “heat stress” on new fronds.
• Frequency: For the first 90 days, water deeply 2 times a week. If we get a heavy Tampa thunderstorm, you can skip that day’s watering.
2. Important: The 6–8 Week Fertilizer Rule
While it’s tempting to feed your new tree right away, you must wait 6–8 weeks before applying standard palm fertilizer.

• Protect the Roots: Your palm is busy growing new, delicate “feeder roots”. Applying heavy fertilizer too early can burn these roots before they are established.
• Safe Alternative: The Epsom salt we provided is safe to use immediately and provides essential minerals without the risk of root burn.
3. The “Secret Ingredient”: Epsom Salt

Foxtail Palms are “hungry” for magnesium, which leaches out of sandy soil very quickly during heavy rains. This is why we provide Epsom Salt with our installations.
• Application: Sprinkle 1 to 1.5 lbs (about 2–3 cups) per mature tree.
• Placement: Spread it evenly around the “drip line” (the area under the tips of the fronds) and stay at least 12 inches away from the trunk.
• The Pro Tip: Always water it in immediately so the magnesium sinks deep into the sand where the roots can reach it.
4. Pruning: The “Hands-Off” Approach
Foxtails are self-cleaning, meaning they drop their own old fronds naturally.
• Leave the Green: Never cut off a frond that still has green or yellow on it. The palm “recycles” nutrients from these old fronds to grow new ones.
• Wait for Brown: Only remove a frond if it is 100% brown and hanging loosely
