Giant Bird of Paradise

Tropical banana plant beside white house fence

Looking to add massive tropical vibes to a tight space? We just finished a beautiful installation of a 15-gallon Giant Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia Nicolai) , and the transformation is incredible.

Why the Giant Bird of Paradise?

The Giant Bird of Paradise is a showstopper. Unlike its smaller orange cousin, the nicolai variety grows massive, banana-like leaves that create a lush, architectural screen.

• Instant Privacy: Even at 15 gallons, these plants have enough height to soften the look of walls, fences, and utility areas.

• Rapid Growth: Once their roots settle into the ground, they take off quickly.

• Tropical Texture: The large fronds catch the light and add a deep green, “resort-style” feel to any corner.

For this project, we placed the Bird of Paradise in a strategic spot near the home to add life to the siding and create a natural transition between the walkway and the structure.

Pro-Tip for Installation: When planting a 15-gallon specimen, make sure to dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball. This loosens the surrounding soil, allowing those thick, fleshy roots to spread out easily. Don’t forget to mulch afterward to keep those roots cool and moist!

Care After the Install

To keep this beauty looking its best:

• Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy while it establishes.

• Sunlight: These love bright, indirect light or full sun (though they appreciate some afternoon shade in extreme heat).

• Wind Protection: Large leaves can tear in high winds (giving them a “shredded” look), so planting them near a wall or fence like we did here is a smart move. We proudly serve homeowners in St.Petersburg, FL and the surrounding communities

Stay green and grow wild,
